We took the twelve online casino brands marketed most heavily to Malaysian players and did one simple thing: we searched for each brand's licence in the issuing regulator's own public register, on 31 August 2026, and recorded what came back. This page publishes what we found. Every figure below can be reproduced by anyone with a browser.
Headline findings
- Half the brands could not be matched to a licence at all. Six of twelve returned no licence naming their own domains in the register we searched.
- Half of the verified licences expire within three months. Of the six brands whose licences we confirmed, three expire before 30 November 2026.
- One licence covers 43 domains. A single licence holder runs dozens of unrelated betting brands across several markets under one registration.
- A brand's Malaysian domain is often not on its own licence. In at least one case the domain Malaysian players are routed to does not appear on the licence the operator displays.

Why “no licence found” is not the same as “unlicensed”
An operator may hold a licence from another jurisdiction such as Curacao or PAGCOR, which would not appear in the register we searched. What the absence does mean is concrete: a player cannot confirm, from the register, who is licensed to hold their money.
Two data quality issues anyone reusing this data should know
Registry search returns near-misses. Searching for “m88” returns a company whose domains include boom888.com, which contains that string by coincidence. Any analysis counting search hits rather than confirmed domain matches will overstate licensing coverage.
Status labels can outlive the licence. We found an entry marked “valid” whose expiry date had already passed. Counting records by status alone will overstate the number of live licences.
Method and limits
Sample: twelve brands selected by marketing visibility to Malaysian players, not randomly sampled. Source: the issuing regulator's public register, searched directly on 31 August 2026. For each brand we confirmed whether a returned licence actually names the brand's own domains, rather than treating a search hit as a match. Per-brand workings including exact licence numbers are published in each individual review.
This is a snapshot of one register on one date. Licences expire and get renewed, and registers lag. We re-check and republish with new dates rather than leaving old figures standing.
